Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in hills just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were numerous British personnel deployed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an assault claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
