Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific decisions from the chair umpire, following the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
